In stainless steel exports, classification is the most underrated step. The HS code determines tariffs, anti-dumping duties and licensing requirements, andthe same shipment can be declared as either "coil" or "sheet," and the duty rate can differ by a factor of two.
Common Codes (First 6 Digits Are International)
| Product | HS Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-rolled stainless steel coil (width ≥600 mm) | 7219.1x | Subdivided by thickness |
| Cold-rolled stainless steel coil (width ≥600 mm) | 7219.3x | Subdivided by thickness |
| Cold-rolled stainless steel sheet (not in coils, width ≥600 mm) | 7219.3x / 7219.4x | Coil and non-coil are separated in some tariff schedules |
| Stainless steel narrow strip (width <600 mm) | 7220.xx | Common for slit strip |
| Stainless steel rounds / shaped sections | 7326.90 or classified by product | Confirm with your customs broker depending on the level of processing |
Three Common Pitfalls
- Declaring "coil" and "sheet" interchangeably: if an opened sheet is declared as coil, an anti-dumping audit may require additional duty to be paid. Always update the declaration elements before and after uncoiling.
- Mismatched product names on the certificate of origin and the invoice: the product name on the CO must match the commercial invoice and packing list, otherwise documents will be rejected at destination customs. Form A / Form E have even stricter completion requirements.
- Overlooking anti-dumping duties and the destination country's CBAM: the EU has anti-dumping measures on certain stainless steel products, and during the CBAM transitional period embedded carbon emissions must also be declared. Confirm the destination country's current measures before shipping.
What We Can Provide: EN 10204 3.1 quality certificates accompanying the goods (with heat number and chemical composition), commercial invoice and packing list, certificate of origin (CO / Form A / Form E), plus a declaration-elements sheet prepared to the destination country's requirements. If third-party inspection (SGS / BV / Intertek) is required, it can be arranged before loading.
We recommend stating the destination country and trade terms (FOB / CIF / CFR) at the quotation stage; we will prepare the document checklist according to the destination port's usual procedures, so fewer additional documents are needed after the cargo arrives at port.
